Although contact lenses were first described by Leonardo da Vinci in 1508, a German glass blower was the manufacturer of the first pair, made of glass in 1887. It took another 60 years until the American Optometry Society saw the wearing of contact lenses as an acceptable form of vision correction, and the field became formally recognised as a profession within their organisation.

Most contact lens wearers enjoy the benefits of excellent vision with few complications. But over time, which may be decades, a significant minority do develop problems, some short term and easily solvable, but others are compelled to stop wearing lenses, and some even develop irreversible damage. A large proportion of candidates who undergo laser vision correction do so because of difficulties with contact lenses, and a desire to remove permanently and safely their dependence on such visual aids.

Problems fall in to four categories. These include contact lens over wear which can chronically starve the eye of oxygen, and other long term problems such a dry eyes. Poor lens hygiene can lead to eye infections, sometimes severe and even blinding. Allergies to lens materials or cleaning solutions are seen frequently, and finally difficulties with poorly fitting lenses.

Prevention is of course the best form of treatment. The possibility of ordering lenses more cheaply over the internet has left many wearers without professional supervision. Regular check ups with an eye care specialist are important to detect early signs of over wear, and to solve fitting issues. Strict adherence to efficient sterilising techniques and a preference for disposable lenses will reduce infections.

Any contact lens wearer developing a red eye should seek medical advice without delay to exclude a serious infection.

Lens materials are improving all the time and contact leneses will continue to be the best form of vision correction for many. But the resilience of the eye to the continual presence of a "foreign body" should not be overestimated. Take care!
