What do you think of Laser Vision Correction, Doctor?

We hear similar comments more and more these days, usually followed by “What do you think of laser treatment, Doctor?” The bottom line is that modern laser vision correction is extremely safe, effective and permanent.
But how does one choose the right laser centre? In fact all laser centres, with latest generation equipment, perform very successful treatments. The price is very variable though. A brief survey of prices in Israel today shows a range from 2750 to 6000+ shekels per eye. What determines this price is purely marketing and sales strategy. There is no scientific evidence that one centre gives better results than any other. Nevertheless there are some objective reasons that make me recommend the laser centre at which I perform my treatments.
Choosing the right doctor is no less important. The doctor should be an experienced ophthalmologist, experienced in laser treatments and specifically with the equipment he uses. Any surgeon who has operated at the same laser centre for several years must have excellent results otherwise he/she would not have been retained.
Not all spectacle wearers are accepted for treatment. I decline to operate on at least 20% of candidates who approach me, for various reasons. With experience a consulting surgeon can pick out those for whom continuing to wear glasses or contacts is a better option.
No successful laser centre will offer treatment to all those who request it. Commercial success for the centre and professional success for the laser surgeon is dependent on outstanding results and thousands of happy patients.
